Taco Seasoning

Facts

Packets of Taco Seasoning for a quick dinner are a common household staple for busy families. Unfortunately the mixes tend to be high in sodium, aren’t organic and have harmful preservative agents. Organic spices, like other organic foods are not subject to the harsh gasses and pesticides. The processing of Organic Spices uses light, steam and temperature exposure, allowing their most beneficial health properties to stay in-tact. The below recipe will walk you through a more nutritious spice blend without compromising flavor.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 15 Minutes

Yield: Per 1# Ground Beef (See my recommendation for multiplying this recipe below)

Ingredients:

1# Markegard Family Grass-Fed Ground Beef

½ - ¾  Cups of Stock or Water

1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil

2 Teaspoons Dried Minced Onion

1 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Chili Powder

1 teaspoon Chipotle Powder

1 teaspoon Cayenne Powder

1 teaspoon Ground Cumin

½ teaspoon Dried Oregano

¼ teaspoon Dried Minced Garlic

¾ Teaspoon Cornstarch

Method:

  1. Mix all of your Dry ingredients in a bowl until well incorporated

  2. Heat a skillet with the Extra Virgin Olive Oil and crumble in the ground beef.

  3. Add in the spice mix when the meat begins to brown and allow them to also caramelize in the pan.

  4. Add ½ Cup Stock or Water to deglaze the pan. If it’s too dry, add the remaining ¼ Cup of Stock or water. The cornstarch will thicken with the residual liquid.

  5. Season with Salt to taste.

Helpful Tips and Notes

  • I always recommend trying the first batch with the recipe listed above – if you love it, I suggest multiplying the recipe by 10.

  • This spice mix would make a great marinade for meats off the grill – just don’t add the cornstarch.

  • Making your own spice blends is a wonderful way to invest in your pantry and explore new flavors.

  • A squeeze of fresh lemon juice over the finished Taco meat is a nice touch!
